It has been said that necessity is the mother of invention. Six years ago, the team responsible to supervise and
implement my three years old son's home ABA therapy program fell into an impasse. He became unresponsive to table
drills and after four months of relentless attempts at verbal imitation he would not repeat a simple sound such
as "ah". On the other hand he was very intrigued about his dad's computer and would often come and watch over my
shoulders, as I would be busy developing software applications. The inspiration came to turn the fascination he
manifested toward this medium into a motivator in his learning process. The result is the software you are about
to explore.
First, pulling on his strength for visual drills, a matching game was developed. Within a week he
mastered the handling of the mouse. He was hooked.
As his mastery of the material grew, more drills were added to
the program: receptive labeling, verbal imitation, expressive labeling, spelling, sight words, and sentence reading.
The rest is history. In the past few years CompuThera matured greatly, including movie clips illustrations of action
verbs, and exclusive compositions from Songspring Productions as musical rewards.
It became a tool appreciated in
renowned learning institutions such as The Forbush Therapeutic School for Children with Autism in Baltimore. As Steven
Grigsby, president of Songspring puts it:
CompuThera, we believe, has possibilities for educational use far beyond the autistic child. We look forward to
seeing this product gain widespread use both as a therapeutic and educational system.
I sincerely hope that CompuThera will offer the same rewarding experience to you as it did to me. May it open new
avenues of learning to many students and visual learners for which traditional methods have proven inadequate.
